White Oaks Weekly - January 6, 2019

From the Principal

Dear Families,

Welcome back and Happy New Year! I hope you all had a relaxing and fun break with your family. White Oaks school is now collecting box tops! Box Tops Clips are found on hundreds of product packages and are worth $.10 for our school. If you are interested in collecting box tops, please make sure their expiration date is valid. Please turn them in to Mrs. Williams in the office in a bag or envelope. If your child would like to help with the collection, you can print out a collection sheet and have your child help attach them to turn in. Thank you for helping our school in this ongoing collection.

Sincerely,

Leah Scholer, Principal

Parent News from the School Counselor - Laura Macfarlane, LCSW
Your children are learning social and emotional skills through regular classroom lessons and reinforcement throughout the school day. All of our students are learning to use I-messages and three steps to talk-it-out when they have small problems. Even small problems can lead to big emotions so it is necessary to calm down before trying to solve the problem. Once children have calmed down, it’s time to talk it out.

  • Step #1: Tell them how you feel.
  • Step #2: Explain why you feel that way.
  • Step #3: Tell them what would help you feel better.

I feel ________________________ when you_______________________.

Could you please____________________?

It takes practice to develop and master the skills of using I-messages and talk-it-out. At White Oaks, the staff is encouraging and coaching students to use these skills to solve small problems. Practicing at home is another opportunity for students to practice these important skills so they can become effective problem solvers.

Playground Fundraiser at Maverick Jack's THIS WEDNESDAY!
Help us raise funds for our new playground by dining at Maverick Jack's (622 Laurel Street, San Carlos) this Wednesday, January 9th. Mention "White Oaks" when placing your order and Maverick Jack's will generously donate 20% of the total to our school! Dine-in or Take-out, anytime from 11am-9pm (*3rd party delivery services, like DoorDash, do not apply). Take advantage of early release day and grab some friends for lunch and/or swing by for dinner. Don't forget to give a shout out to White Oaks so we get credit for your visit. Thank you for helping us reach our goal!

Paint a tile and leave a legacy that will beautify our school while raising money for our new White Oaks playground!
In an effort to raise the remaining $25,000 needed to fund the project, the PTA is selling art tiles for a permanent art installation on campus. We are selling family tiles and sponsored teacher tiles. Sponsored tiles will be painted by one of our amazing White Oaks staff members.

Tiles cost $125 each and are available in the office through January 31st, or online through our White Oaks PTA Square Store: https://squareup.com/store/whiteoakspta

We will be having tile paint days at Laurel Street Arts. Dates and times will be announced in the new year.

Additional cash donations to the White Oaks PTA to fund this project are welcome after a family has met their annual San Carlos Education Foundation contribution.

  • Chorus: Wednesdays 4-5 pm (no rehearsals winter break)
  • Tech week begins Saturday April 20 and continues Monday-Thursday 4-8pm (Main Cast) and 4-5:30pm (Chorus).

ROPES Presentations Are Coming And Judges Are Needed!
We are looking for parents and community member that would like to serve as a judge for the ROPES (Rite of Passage Experiences). ROPES are challenging projects that 4th, 6th and 8th grade students have completed which allow them to learn about their world and themselves in deeper but fun way.

There are 3 opportunities to judge:

  • Monday, February 4th, 6:00PM – 8:30PM (arrive at 5:30PM)
  • Tuesday, February 5th, 6:00PM – 8:30PM (arrive at 5:30PM)
  • Wednesday, February 6th, 6:00PM – 8:30PM (arrive at 5:30PM)

We would not be able to maintain this valuable program without the support of our community. We are asking for you to join district staff and other community members by volunteering to serve as a judge on one of our judges panels. Typically we have two to three judges per room and they judge four to six student presentations in an evening. I hope that you will be able to join us in this worthwhile event. If you are able to judge on any of those times, please contact Christina Carrier either via email at[email protected] or by phone at 650-590-5935.
