White Oaks Weekly - December 16, 2018

From the Principal

Dear Families,

I wish you a wonderful winter break full of joy with family and friends. As you plan for the weeks ahead, you might be looking for new books to share with your child. Winter is a great time for a cozy family read aloud, and children of all ages benefit from time to think and talk about books together. Check out this list for some ideas. You may also want to check out Holiday Pajama Storytime on Friday, December 21st at the Reading Bug. Happy reading!

Here are a few reminders for your calendar:

  • School will be closed December 24 – January 7
  • School resumes on Tuesday, January 8
  • School is closed on January 21 in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

I look forward to welcoming students and families back to campus in 2019!

Sincerely,

Leah Scholer, Principal

2018-2019 Yearbooks are for sale! They can be purchased directly from Jostens here. Yearbooks are $25 each, and the sales deadline is this Friday, December 21, 2018. Yearbooks are distributed the last week of school by your student's teacher.

Please contact Teresa Williams with any questions via email or 650-508-7317.

Paint a tile and leave a legacy that will beautify our school while raising money for our new White Oaks playground!
In an effort to raise the remaining $25,000 needed to fund the project, the PTA is selling art tiles for a permanent art installation on campus. We are selling family tiles and sponsored teacher tiles. Sponsored tiles will be painted by one of our amazing White Oaks staff members.

Tiles cost $125 each and are available in the office through January 31st, or online through our White Oaks PTA Square Store: https://squareup.com/store/whiteoakspta

We will be having tile paint days at Laurel Street Arts. Dates and times will be announced in the new year.

Additional cash donations to the White Oaks PTA to fund this project are welcome after a family has met their annual San Carlos Education Foundation contribution.

Playground Fundraiser at Maverick Jack's on Laurel Street
Mark your calendars and set reminders! Help us raise funds for our new playground by dining at Maverick Jack's (622 Laurel Street, San Carlos) on January 9th, 2019. Mention "White Oaks" when placing your order and Maverick Jack's will generously donate 20% of the total to our school! Dine-in or Take-out, anytime from 11am-9pm (*3rd party delivery services, like DoorDash, do not apply). Take advantage of early release day and grab some friends for lunch and/or swing by for dinner. Don't forget to give a shout out to White Oaks so we get credit for your visit. Thank you for helping us reach our goal!

Register for the School Play beginning in January!
As you plan for your spring activities reserve room for your child to participate in the White Oaks School Play. This year White Oaks will again partner with the San Carlos Children's Theater. The chorus will be open to all grades.

  • Main Cast: Wednesdays 1-4pm and Fridays 3-5pm beginning March 6th
  • Chorus: Wednesdays 4-5 pm (no rehearsals winter break)
  • Tech week begins Saturday April 20 and continues Monday-Thursday 4-8pm (Main Cast) and 4-5:30pm (Chorus).

In Search of Unique Auction Items
Do you have access to a vacation home, event/sports tickets, fine wine/wine tasting or another fun experience? Does a family member or friend work in the entertainment industry? We’d love to hear from you! Our volunteer committee is hard at work creating unique auction items for our March 2019 Starlight Gala & Auction. Write to our events team at [email protected] with your ideas and connections and help make this year the best auction yet.

End of Year Giving
*Donate Early*
As we enter the last weeks of 2018, we invite you to consider making your SCEF Annual Fund donation earlier than usual. Take advantage of possible 2018 tax deductions by making a gift of cash or stock to SCEF before December 31st. As our district faces challenging budget issues, SCEF would like to be able to provide a good estimate of our grant to Superintendent Harmeier and her team by March 30, 2019. Donate now at: www.scefkids.org/donate.

*Double your Donation*
Many employers will match your gift to SCEF. Our handy Double the Donation tool will help you determine if your company has a matching program. Go to www.scefkids.org/donate to learn more.

*Appreciated Stock*
A gift of appreciated stock you've held for more than a year is better than giving cash. If you donate stock that has increased in value since you've owned it - and if you itemize deductions - you can take a charitable deduction for the stock's fair market value on the day you give it away. You'll also avoid capital gains taxes on the increase in value over time. Go to www.scefkids.org/stock to learn how.

SCEF Starlight Gala tickets—Available from Jan 8 2019
Starlight Gala tickets will go on sale to the public on January 8 at 10 am. Please visit www.scefkids.org/events that day for purchase link and information.
