From the Principal
Dear Families,
I would like to thank everyone who has been able to share their input about our new playground proposals. We had a parent info session during our PTA meeting this past week and the proposals have been up around campus with sticky notes available to add your thoughts. You will have a couple more days to give your feedback if you haven't had a chance already. The proposals will still be up on Tuesday, and they will also be available to view at our Book Fair on Wednesday, November 14th during our Family Fun Night. We will then have representatives from the staff, preschool, and parent community meet to make a final recommendation to PTA based on the information we’ve received.
Along with our work to make our playground more physically safe, we are also helping students build capacity in dealing with conflict resolution. Laura Macfarlane, our school counselor, is collaborating with our staff to build students’ repertoire of tools they can use when they get their feelings hurt or feel they have been treated unfairly. One tool we are beginning to introduce is called the “Talk it out” method. This provides students with a structured way to say how they feel and why they need someone to stop or change their behavior. The hope is to instill ownership and confidence in students so they can solve problems independently. The students will be having lessons with Ms. Macfarlane to learn the following steps:
- How to calm down
- How to “talk it out”
- I feel....
- When you…
- I need you to….
- How to apologize
How to help at home:
Talk with your child about ways to calm down when they are feeling angry or frustrated. Taking deep breaths and counting are some examples. Practice the “talk it out” method at home. Ask your child to think of real-life situations where this could be applied and model what this approach looks like.
Sincerely,
Leah Scholer, Principal
