Principal’s Message

Dear White Oaks Families,
Thank you for participating in Parent-Teacher Goal Setting Conferences this past week. It was a great opportunity for parents and teachers to connect and establish a strong partnership for the year.
As you noticed, these conferences focused on setting goals for student learning, and emphasizing academic, social, and emotional growth. Parents will receive report cards at the end of the first trimester in November, and teachers will continue to keep you informed of your child's progress throughout the year. Parents or teachers can request a conference at any time if there are questions or concerns.
Digital Citizenship Week
The third week of October (10/20-10/24) is Digital Citizenship Week. At White Oaks, students use technology to support critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration. Digital activities include authoring ebooks, drafting essays, researching topics, and collaborating on projects. Students also learn to search safely, protect their privacy, and model kindness and caring in all communications.
Supporting Balanced Digital Use
During the elementary years, children are learning to self-regulate, including balancing their “digital diets.” Here are some helpful guidelines to consider as you reflect on how technology functions in your family:
-
Get involved: Engage with your child and discover what they enjoy online.
-
Visit Common Sense Media: A great source for reviews and tips on movies, books, and technology.
-
Set an example: Model positive behavior around when and how devices are used. Check out this 42-second video about taming device time.
-
Make dinner time device-free.
-
Set clear limits: Create a family schedule for media use and ensure devices are used and charged in public areas. Consider creating a Family Media Plan.
Together, we’ll guide students to become responsible digital citizens!

Come Join the Fun with Diwali Recess Activities!
The next celebration on our PTA Culture & Belonging Calendar is Diwali! The festival of lights is vibrant and culturally rich, and we’d love some help to make sure we’re honoring the traditions in the right way.
Can you spare some time to help with our board display? Are you free on Friday 10/17 anytime between 11:30 a.m. - 1:10 p.m.? If so, we need volunteers to help with the fun recess activities we have planned. Would you like to share how you celebrate Diwali with the students at a Welcome Wednesday? Contact Barbara Taylor ([email protected]) or Mariel Valezzi ([email protected]) to sign up!
We NEED You for the Walk a Thon and Carnival
Join us for the Walk A Thon and Carnival on Oct. 19th at 11:00 a.m. We truly can’t pull this off without your help – there’s a job for every family! Please browse the list and sign up for a spot. The shifts are short and a lot of fun!
Special traditions such as the White Oaks Walk-a-Thon are powered by the PTA parent volunteers and your SCEF donations and we thank you! This is one of our biggest events and truly excites our kids and our school community.
