Principals Message

Dear White Oaks Families,

As the end of the school year approaches, families often ask how to support student learning over the summer. Already, you are planning summer experiences that build knowledge, spark curiosity about the world, and help your child gain confidence. Riding bikes, hiking, visiting the public library, playing in the neighborhood, attending summer camps, playing board games as a family, and traveling outside of our city builds knowledge and a sense of wonder.

Reading books and discussing them together develops rich language skills and fosters a love of literacy. In addition, the more relaxed summer schedule can be a wonderful time to build independence and confidence at all ages as children learn new skills such as tying shoes and how to contribute to family chores.

Children learn best through play, so we encourage you to get your children active and activate that imagination as much as possible this summer. More and more research is coming out that supports the belief that children need play in order to develop skills crucial to their social and academic development.

San Carlos library will be hosting several events this summer that can be fun for the whole family! For more information please see event details at smcl.org/events. You can filter by location and age of children for appropriate events.

This year’s 2024 Summer Learning Challenge at the San Carlos library runs from June 1-August 31. The Summer Learning Challenge is a fun -- and FREE -- way to engage youth, families and adults by challenging them to read, explore new activities and learn new skills all summer long. Youth 18 years and younger can participate in the program to earn a chance to win a $1,000 scholarship! Complete the program more than once to increase your chances of winning. Other prizes may be available. For more information or to print another reading log, please visit the San Mateo County Libraries Summer Challenge.

Our White Oaks Summer Learning Resources have been compiled with care to keep your student engaged in learning activities throughout the months away from White Oaks.

You may also want to check the list of Best Apps recommended by Common Sense Media and the educational apps your children have been using this year through ClassLink will be available to them through July.

I wish you a wonderful summer full of new memories and time with your family!

Warmest regards,
Leah Scholer
Principal

Time is Running Out
We are running out of time to meet our goal and need your help to meet our grant obligations to fund key positions and school programs next year. Please check the draft donor roll to review your donations this year, and if there are any errors or omissions, please let Scott Cleaveland know. You can still make a gift to support the 2024-25 school year!

Don’t Delay, Donate Today!
Thanks to all who donated in May. We have made progress toward our consolidated fundraising goal, and now have $700,000 left to raise to fulfill our commitment for the 2024-25 school year. Your donations help fund key educator positions and programs in every school AND will support classroom teacher grants, assemblies, library book purchases, art programs, teacher appreciation, DEIB initiatives and community gatherings and school celebrations via your PTA. Every contribution is appreciated to help us achieve our $3.7 million goal. Our fiscal year ends June 30.

Please make a gift today to support San Carlos students next school year!

Rock Band Summer Camp With Hummingbird Music School is Back!

Has your child ever wanted to play in a rock band? Do they want to learn a new instrument? Or do they want to get better at one they already play? We hope they'll join us this summer at Rock Band Camp with Hummingbird Music School!

Campers will be immersed in live music and performance, experiencing what it’s like to be in a rock band with fellow musicians and bandmates! Sign up to learn either guitar, ukulele, bass, drums, keyboard or vocals (or a combination of these). Campers will together form a band, attend daily band rehearsals, participate in music workshops, and perform with their band in a live showcase for family and friends at the end of the week. Bands will be formed on the first day of camp, based on experience level and/or age. Campers can choose to form a band with friends!

Camp will be held throughout June, July and August at Arroyo School in San Carlos. One-week sessions run from Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-3 p.m.. All skill levels are welcome! For more information and to register, click here.
