Principal’s Message
Dear White Oaks families,
I hope the adjustment back to school is going smoothly. This is the time of year to not only reflect and set goals, but also revisit expectations and routines. Our school psychologist, Matt Steinborn, conducted a training with our teachers this past week that reviewed strategies for implementing positive behavior in the classroom. Although these slides are focused on in-class supports, there are several strategies that can cross over into the household. The following four elements apply to any environment in which we want kids to thrive:
- Set clear expectations/rules
- Create predictable and consistent procedures and systems
- Rewards/positive reinforcement for expected behaviors
- Clear and consistent (natural) consequences for unexpected behaviors (this is different from punitive punishment)
For more resources on how to reinforce positive behavior at home, check out the resources below. You may also be interested in Dr. Ross Greene’s presentation “Raising Human Beings: Creating a Collaborative Partnership with Your Child or Teen”, sponsored by the San Mateo County Office of Education on Jan. 31 at 5:30 p.m. (online).
