White Oaks Weekly - August 28, 2022

Principals Message

Dear White Oaks families,

We are jumping right into a fabulous year! It was so heartwarming to see our campus bustling with excitement this past week. It feels so good to have the school alive again with the laughter and chatter of little voices.

Please take some time to browse our website to get to learn more about our staff and our school. Remember that tomorrow, Tuesday, August 30, is our Back to School Night (parents only). Join me for my Principal’s Welcome from 6:00-6:25 p.m. on the blacktop and visit your classroom from 6:30-7:15 p.m. Friday, September 2, is a minimum day and dismissal will be 12:25 p.m. for all students.

Welcome Wednesday
This Wednesday, August 31, will be our first Welcome Wednesday of the year! We are thrilled to be back in person and this event will start promptly at 8:25-8:40 a.m. Students will join their class lines on the blacktop and this year, we are able to invite parents to participate in this beautiful community-building event. If you are able to join us, please be sure to stand behind the lines of students so everyone can see and hear the morning assembly. Each week, we will share announcements, learn about White Oaks and our students, and sing our school song.

Breakfast and Lunch
Breakfast should be picked up by the child (parent can walk their child directly to the kitchen) in the morning from 8:15 a.m. until when the bell rings to line up for class at 8:25 a.m. If they grab it right at 8:15 a.m., the child needs to sit at a lunch table and eat before lining up for class (there is no walking around eating). If they are running behind and grab it right before the bell rings, then they will have to put it in their backpack until snack time to eat it.

Late birds will go directly to class when they arrive at school. On their way out to snack recess, the teacher will notify the kids to go to the kitchen to pick up their breakfast if they ordered it.

Snack is not provided as part of this program. Please continue to send your child to school with a healthy snack.

Lunch is picked up as usual. On their way to lunch, they need to stop by the kitchen to pick up their food. The child will tell the lunch server their name and they will be given lunch.

All breakfast and lunch need to be pre-ordered. Only students who have ordered food items will receive one. Currently, there is a hold on ordering future food items. You’ll receive a notification from SCSD when it resumes in September.

Drop Off/Pick Up Reminders
Starting Monday, August 29, we'll ask parents to help children join playtime on their own as much as possible to limit the number of adults on the yard. You will notice a sign at the playground entrance with a "students only" reminder. By asking parents, caregivers, and preschool siblings to stay off the yard, we are able to provide a safe space for active play. Our "students only" routine also allows supervisors to see the children playing and be visible when students need help.

PARKING: Please remember that Fairmont Ave and both the East and West White Oak Way cul de sac are loading zones only and cars are not to park there from 7:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m. If you would like to park and walk your child in, please do so on another street. Also, please be aware that you are not blocking any of the neighbors driveways.

School Site Council Parent/Community Membership - 2 Positions Open
The White Oaks School Site Council consists of 5 parent or community members and 5 staff members, which always includes the principal. Parent/community members are selected through the election process. There are approximately seven meetings scheduled each year. Meetings are usually scheduled on selected Thursday afternoons at 3:00-4:00 p.m. via Zoom until further notice. Please refer to the SSC News September 2021 email that will go out on September 16th for more information about White Oaks School Site Council.

If you are interested in becoming a member of the Site Council, please email Leah Scholer with a blurb about why you are interested in the position and how you contribute to the Council. If there are more than two people interested, we will hold an election to fill the opening.

Here's to a Great School Year Ahead

Welcome back! We are excited to announce a collaboration between the San Carlos Education Foundation and PTAs to streamline and simplify fundraising across the district. Beginning this school year, ALL fundraising will be consolidated with SCEF.

Our fundraising goal this year is $3.7 million and the suggested per student donation is $1,850, which includes funding for your PTA. Check out our new website for more information.

SCEF depends on the efforts of our volunteer board and other community members to raise the funds necessary to ensure a quality education for every student. Special thanks to Wendy Wood, a professional graphic designer whose boys attend San Carlos schools. Wendy has donated her design services for several years and we are grateful for her generous donation. Also, thanks to local parent Veronica Dils for providing website design at a deep discount so that we could refresh our website to support our new alliance with the PTA. If you would like to lend your professional expertise to help our local schools, please contact our Executive Director, Kathy Parmer-Lohan.
