White Oaks Weekly - November 3, 2019

From the Principal

Dear Families,

Now as the school year is underway, I want to thank you for the many ways you make a difference at White Oaks. Joining your PTA (we are at 90%!!!), volunteering in classrooms, supporting students at home and attending events here at school.

Every year the parent-led San Carlos Education Foundation (SCEF) works to raise critical funds to support Smaller Class Sizes (K-3), Field Trips, Science Curriculum, Technology Support and Devices, Music for Minors, Counselors and a School Site Principal Flex to fund school site needs. This year at White Oaks, I am using my SCEF Flex Fund to purchase Seesaw, a digital portfolio platform, as well as professional development opportunities and supplies to support our Makerspace.

Wednesday, November 6th is SCEF Day. Consider having your student wear green on Wednesday.

If you haven't already done so, I hope you will consider making a donation to SCEF. Support from parents like you is critical to help sustain and enhance the education we provide to our students. You can learn more at www.scefkids.org.

Sincerely,

Leah Scholer, Principal

P.S. This is a friendly reminder that the San Carlos School District prohibits dogs on school grounds at ALL times, including weekends and after-school hours. For safety and health reasons, please help remind our families and the surrounding community to only walk their dogs on a leash through the White Oak Way section of campus. Dogs should not be off-leash and should not be on or near the playground or grass area. Dogs should also not be allowed to drink from our water fountains as our students use these during the school day. Thank you for your support and understanding!

White Oaks Holiday Store
It’s that time of year- the White Oaks Holiday Store is a cherished tradition and will be open on Saturday, December 14th this year! Pick-a-Project will be on Tuesday, November 5th at 2:40. After you pick up the kids, come to the MU and pick up a project to take home and complete at your leisure (mostly). For those new to this event, you take home a kit that has all materials and instructions necessary to assemble a certain number of gifts. When they are ready, you bring them back. Then on the day of the event, your gifts are sold to the White Oaks students to give to family members on the holidays. We are making memories here! Most projects require NO crafty abilities and are very easy to put together. However, there are a few that require a little more know-how.  Along that vein, we are specifically looking for help with sewing projects. Please contact Kirsten Kell if you have sewing abilities to share.

Holiday Store Key Dates:
* 11/5/19 (2:40pm): Pick-a-Project in the MU
* 12/5/19 & 12/9/19 (7-9pm): Project Parties in the MU
* 12/13/19 (2:40pm): Event Set Up in the MU
* 12/14/19 (9-12pm): Holiday Store

Get excited!

Walk to School November!
Reminder that this Wednesday, November 6th is Walk to School Wednesday! We will be at school to pass out some cool (maybe turkeys or pumpkins) charms to our walkers, scooters, and bikers. Look for the balloons to find your charm. Please bring your chains if you already have one. We still need a few volunteers to help pass out charms the first Wednesday of each month. Please email Shipeng Fu if you would like to volunteer.

Healthy Cities Tutoring Orientation & Training for New & Existing Tutors - November 7
Join us for our final training this fall and make a difference in the life of a child. Healthy Cities Tutoring matches volunteer tutors with students in K-8th grade who are struggling in school and need additional support. Tutoring is just 45 minutes once a week, and timing is flexible with openings before, during, or after school. Tutors select the school(s) and grade-level(s) they prefer and we match them accordingly.

Attend our upcoming training session on Thursday, November 7th, 6:30pm-8pm at the Clifford School Library (225 Clifford Ave, RWC) to learn how to help children one-on-one in the areas of reading, writing, math, engagement in learning, and self-esteem. Visit healthycitiestutoring.org for more information.

Welcome Home San Carlos - Nov 7
The San Carlos Community is invited to join a different conversation on housing in the City of Good Living. “Welcome Home, San Carlos” is a joint effort between the City and Home for All, a San Mateo County collaborative, aimed at helping our community talk more constructively about the shared challenge of housing. Our goal is to listen to the community, and to hear about the priorities, concerns, and values of those who live and work in San Carlos.

We are launching a series of engagements to talk about our community’s hopes for the future, focusing specifically on housing and identifying key priorities. A major focus is to connect with community members who are less likely to participate in formal civic processes to listen and learn together. Our first community conversation is scheduled for Thursday, November 7th at the Hiller Museum and will be an informative dialogue about people’s personal experience with housing and their goals and aspirations for the future of San Carlos. Doors will open at 6:15 pm and the program will start at 7:00 pm. Light refreshments and child care will be provided. Because we want this conversation to focus on community perspectives, city staff and elected officials will be present only as listeners. We hope that you can join us!
