White Oaks Weekly - February 24, 2019

From the Principal

Dear Families,

I hope you all had a relaxing break and are recharged for the second half of the year! Our playground construction is still underway and should be wrapping up by the end of this week. Please join us for our “Welcome Ceremony” next Wednesday, March 6th at 8:30 am. We will be opening up the playground for everyone as well as celebrating the installation of our tile wall on the MU!

As we acclimate back into the routines of school, be mindful of our drop off and pick up procedures. It is in the interest of safety that we ask you to not leave your car unattended on Fairmont and White Oak Way. Please refer to the diagram below to see where our loading zones are located. Cars should not be parked in these zones between 8:00 am and 3:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

Check out this flyer for more information on the safe routes to school designed for White Oaks. Take note of the map on the second page which shows the crosswalks that should be used when walking to school. The map also indicates where pedestrian flags are available. We have had several flags go missing over the course of the year. The flags are important for pedestrian safety but are also very expensive. We do not have the budget to keep replacing them, so if any are found, please bring them to the office and we will get them to their proper crosswalks.

To ensure our procedures are clearly communicated with the community, we are looking into forming a Safe Routes to School Team. If you are interested in joining, please contact Teresa Williams at [email protected]. The San Mateo Office of Education is holding a seminar called “The Slow Way Home” on Thursday, March 7th from 9:00 am - 11:00 am at the Boys and Girls Club of South San Francisco. This is an amazing opportunity to become informed about best practices around safe routes to school.

Students are practicing the ways to be respectful, responsible and safe during school and it is so powerful when we, as a community, practice the White Oaks Way during pick up and drop off as well.

Sincerely,

Leah Scholer, Principal
