Principals Message

Dear White Oaks Families,

Heritage Day

We had a most spectacular Heritage Day last Wednesday! Being in the multi-use room and celebrating OUR cultures and those from around the world brings a sense of connectedness and unity for our children and community. It was a beautiful sight to see students curious about the displays at the table, play games, learn words from other languages, and of course try a variety of food. I learned so much from all of you.  Our collective efforts help to ensure that at a young age, our children learn that cultures and people have differences AND similarities!  We celebrate all of them. Thanks to all the parents and family members who made the event such a spectacular success!

Report Cards

Trimester 2 report cards were released on March 13 and are now available to view and download through your child’s PowerSchool account.

We are proud of the growth and accomplishments of every child. These report cards reflect student progress in academics as well as growth in the future-ready skills named in SCSD’s Learner Profile, our district’s north star: Kind Citizens, Self-Aware Learners, and Curious Problem Solvers. SCSD describes the Learner Profile as being “at the heart” of the Strategic Plan and LCAP, and the district’s public materials state that learners develop not only knowledge, but also interpersonal skills, ownership, adaptability, and reflection.

As you review your child’s report card, please keep in mind that in many standards-based areas, a score of 3 means a student is meeting the end-of-year grade-level standard. Because this is Trimester 2, many students may still be appropriately receiving 2s, indicating they are progressing toward the end-of-year standard. This is very typical at this point in the school year, and we still have one more trimester of learning to go.

Report cards are intended to show where students are right now in their learning journey. Some areas may already reflect strong independence, while other areas are still developing. This is a normal and important part of growth. Our goal is to continue supporting every student in their academic growth while also developing as Kind Citizens, Self-Aware Learners, and Curious Problem Solvers.

For families looking for ways to support reading at home, Home Reading Helper offers short, grade-level videos and simple activities for Pre-K through 3rd grade, including phonemic awareness games, support for tackling unfamiliar words, fluency coaching, and other practical reading strategies. It is a helpful resource for families wondering how to support their child’s reading at home in quick, manageable ways.

To help families better interpret the reading level letters used in grades 2–3, we have created a one-page guide that shows the relationship between reading levels, key literacy development, and instructional focus. This resource can help provide a clearer picture of where your child is along their reading development journey.

As always, families are welcome to reach out to their child’s teacher with any questions or to discuss progress and ways to support continued growth.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support.

In community,

Rosina Tong

Principal

Ability Awareness is our Culture & Belonging PTA focus for March. It’s a time to deepen our understanding of the unique talents and challenges experienced by some of our students, while also recognizing and celebrating the achievements and contributions of people with disabilities.

Our Culture & Belonging PTA committee created a parents guide with a number of parenting support resources on topics like neurodiversity, where to get help, parent support groups and where to start if you think your child needs more help at school. Here you’ll find some informative and fun activities to share with your children at home like learning ASL, picture books, crafts and occupational therapy practices to help regulation. If you have any resources you'd like to share in our parents guide, please send them to Barbara Taylor [email protected]
