White Oaks Weekly - April 29, 2018

From the Principal

Dear Families,

On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, we enjoyed outstanding performances of our school play, "Knight at Dawn Kids"! This spring event is a wonderful example of the 5Cs in action! Ensemble and main cast members alike demonstrated collaboration, creativity, and communication skills as they brought this popular story to life. With the support of dedicated parent volunteers, SCCT staff, PTA, and Chicken's Ball, our students beamed with confidence and pride. What a special White Oaks tradition!

Congratulations, "Knight at Dawn" cast and ensemble! You worked hard and you did it! I am so proud of you!

Hometown Days - Help Needed!
We are looking for a couple of enthusiastic parents to organize the White Oaks community for this year's Hometown Days Parade on May 19th. The parade is less than 3 weeks away and if White Oaks is going to be able to participate, planning needs to start ASAP! Please reach out to Amy Kim, Chair of Special Events, if you can help.

Safety Drills
Last week, we held a Lockdown/Barricade drill as part of our regular commitment to practicing the Big 5, a set of county-wide emergency protocols. In an emergency, Lockdown/Barricade is initiated for immediate threat of danger, and when any movement will put students and staff in jeopardy. When we practice drills at school with the children, we use examples such as a stray animal on campus, or construction vehicles moving across the playground.

In our training with our school resource officer (without the children), staff also discussed other means of protection such as fleeing campus. With guidance from Officer Rosales, we discussed how "thinking on our feet" is an important strategy when determining a response to an emergency. In certain situations, lockdown is not the best choice and instead it may make sense to flee the campus with the students. If staff needed to leave campus with students due to an emergency, our designated reunification spot is Burton Park. Each month, we practice and reflect upon our drills with support from district staff and law enforcement. Our next drill is scheduled for May 3rd when we will practice our fire drill/evacuation protocol.
