From the Principal
Teachers are completing assessments this week in preparation for report cards coming home on January 26th. Assessments take many forms including “paper and pencil” tasks as well as more informal moments as we watch students engaging in learning tasks, collaborating with peers, and navigating challenges. We’re pleased with the progress students are demonstrating and we’re excited to share update on the goals set in October. Students are soaring!
- 92% of students met or exceeded goals on recent math benchmark assessments. This is the first year of this new assessment, and we’re gathering baseline data in order to determine growth targets. We’re off to a strong start in every grade level!
- 87% of students met or exceeded benchmark targets on reading assessments, up from 82% last fall and on track to meet or exceed the district goal of 89% this spring. Last spring, we ended the school year with 97% of students meet or exceeding June reading targets, and we expect similar growth this spring as students continue to receive instruction and personalized practice at their “just right” level during Reading Workshop.
As you review your child’s report card later this week, please keep in mind that each child grows at his/her own developmental rate. Our teachers are experts at watching for each child’s readiness to leap forward, and offering a variety of learning opportunities to help each student grow. At any given moment in every classroom, students are stretching beyond the grade level benchmark in some areas and needing support to reach learning targets in other areas. We say, “Everyone is working on something at White Oaks!” In addition to teaching academic skills, we continue to help students grow in the areas of social and emotional development, building a “Mindset for Learning” as students learn to self-reflect and persevere towards goals. At each step along the way, our students are gaining confidence and celebrating progress.
We value our strong partnership with parents and we’re continuing to work towards the school-wide goals we set in the fall:
- Increase rigor, student ownership and engagement to support learning
- Empower parents with early and ongoing feedback about student progress, as well as resources to help at home
As you reflect on your child’s progress, I encourage you to reach out to your child’s teacher with any questions or comments about your child’s learning or how we’re doing with our school-wide goals.

Invitation to Participate in the Superintendent Search
The Board of Education is currently in the process of conducting an executive search for a new Superintendent of the San Carlos School District. This is a very important decision and the Trustees are committed to involving the voices of all members of the school community, including parents, teachers, students and district staff. Please plan on attending one of the two Community Meetings scheduled to provide input into the selection process. The Community Meetings will be:
• Monday, January 22, 2018 at 7pm at the District Office, 1200 Industrial Road Unit 9B
• Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at 8:45am at the Heather Elementary School.
There is also an online survey available for members of the community to complete. The survey will be available from January 22 through February 5, 2018 and can be accessed through this link. Your participation in both the Community Meetings and the online survey will provide valuable information to the Trustees as they go forward in the selection process
Site Council Meeting
The White Oaks School Site Council will meet on Thursday, January 25th from 3:00 – 4:00 pm in the school library. All meetings are open to the community. The agenda will include:

ROPES Presentations Are Coming And Judges Are Needed!
We are looking for parents and community member that would like to serve as a judge for the ROPES (Rite of Passage Experiences). ROPES are challenging projects that 4th, 6th and 8th grade students have completed which allow them to learn about their world and themselves in deeper but fun way.
There are 3 opportunities to judge:
• Monday, February 5th, 6:00PM – 8:30PM (arrive at 5:30PM)
• Tuesday, February 6th, 6:00PM – 8:30PM (arrive at 5:30PM)
• Wednesday, February 7th, 6:00PM – 8:30PM (arrive at 5:30PM)
We would not be able to maintain this valuable program without the support of our community. We are asking for you to join district staff and other community members by volunteering to serve as a judge on one of our judges panels. Typically we have two to three judges per room and they judge four to six student presentations in an evening.
I hope that you will be able to join us in this worthwhile event. If you are able to judge on any of those times, please contact Christina Carrier either via email or by phone at 650-590-5935.
Book Drive for ROPES Project
Hi, We are Noel & Chase, former White Oaks students, and we are collecting books to donate to 10 Books A Home for our 4th Grade ROPES Project. We are looking for preschool (ages 2-5) books. The books can be new or gently used. There are collection bins in the White Oaks Elementary School & Arroyo School offices. Books can be dropped off anytime before 1/29/18.
10 Books A Home is a local nonprofit organization that provides free home tutoring to high poverty preschoolers to help the children get ready for elementary school. We both love to read and think kids should be able to learn.
ROPES Project – Pets In Need Request
We are doing our ROPES project to benefit Pets In Need because there are dogs that need our help! We are collecting new or gently used dog toys and we hope that you can get stuff to donate. You can donate it in the box at the school office with a poster above it. If you want to donate other things you can go to the Pets In Need site and check out more stuff they need! Thank you!” – Mollie and Parker (former WO students)
