From the Principal
As you know, we are using the Second Step program in your child’s classroom. The Second Step program teaches children important skills for getting along with others and doing well in school. It also helps ensure our school is a safe and supportive place where everyone can learn. Lessons include the Second Step Child Protection Unit. In these lessons, students learn three types of skills:
Students learn important safety rules such as bicycle safety, seat belt safety, fire safety, and gun safety.
Students learn about safe, unsafe, and unwanted touches, as well as rules about touching private body parts. They learn to say no to unsafe or unwanted touches, and to tell a trusted adult if someone breaks rules about touching private body parts.
These lessons give students a chance to practice asking an adult for help, telling an adult about an unsafe situation, and being assertive to get out of unsafe situations.
Our school staff is committed to promoting a safe and supportive school climate. We teach safety lessons annually in all grades as part of our implementation of the Health Education Content Standards. The heartbreaking news regarding inappropriate contact with students at Brittan Acres by a former aide remind us of why these lessons are so important.
This week, Laura MacFarlane, School Counselor, will send home more information about the Child Protection Unit as well as information about upcoming parent education events. Information will include a parent permission letter for the Child Protection Unit which will begin this month in all classrooms at White Oaks.

IT IS HOLIDAY STORE TIME!!!
The White Oaks Holiday Store is coming up this week on 12/9! It starts at 9am, though a line usually starts to form by 8:30. Look in your child’s folder this week for the flyer with more information and the shopping recipient list.
PLEASE be sure that they have this list with them when they come on Saturday. They also need cash, a shopping bag, and a donation for the Second Harvest Food Bank. (If it is raining, bring an umbrella!) You may also want some cash to grab a coffee from the barista who will be keeping us caffeinated!
IT IS OFFICIALLY TIME TO GET EXCITED!
School Play Sign-Ups Coming Soon!
We are excited to announce that White Oaks will be partnering again with San Carlos Children’s Theater to put on a play at White Oaks this spring. Next week the third graders will get to share their preferences for which show will be produced.
Third graders will be given priority for the roles in the main cast. Second graders will be considered for any remaining roles. There will be also be an ensemble that will be open to kindergartners, first-graders and second or third graders who aren’t interested in a main role. If capacity exceeds interest a lottery will be used to select participants.
Practices will be held for three hours a day on Wednesdays after school for the main cast and one hour a day also on Wednesdays for the ensemble.
Walk to School Wednesday
Just a reminder that the first Wednesday of the month is this week. Walk, roll or cycle to school and stop by with the volunteers to collect a charm before heading to the yard to play.
No Parking in Loading Zones
Please remember that “white curb” zones are no parking areas from 7:30 am to 3:30 pm. (White Oak Way and Fairmont). These areas are designated loading zones. Drivers may pull up and drop off/pick up only during designated hours. Thank you for your help.
PTA Thank Yous!
A tremendous thank you to Debbie Blucher, Yvonne Mehta, and Shanna Guetta for all their efforts and work in organizing and running the White Oaks School Book Fair and Family Fun Night. Thank you also to all the volunteers that came out to help set up and clean up, manage the cash registers and help on the floor – and to all the families who shopped at the fair and helped raise thousands of dollars for our school and classroom libraries. The kids had a great time picking out many wonderful books and the air was filled with a love of reading all week long!
We’d also like to send a special thank you to Jonathan Podmore for managing our school gear orders this fall. We appreciate your efforts to help our students and their families show off their White Oaks school spirit!

SCEF Supports Your School Library!
Strong libraries build strong students. Your donation to SCEF ensures that all students have access to libraries. Last year, over $300,000 of SCEF raised funds was used to keep all our school libraries open and staffed.
