White Oaks Weekly - January 13, 2019

From the Principal

Dear Families,

It was such a joy to get back into the routine of school and see the excitement of the children reuniting with their teachers and friends. We have some exciting news to share about the installation of our new playground. Demolition will begin the week of our February break on Tuesday, February 19th. It will take approximately seven days to install the playground, so construction will continue the week we get back. The construction area will be fenced off until the project is completed. One important detail to note is that the campus will be closed during the break from Monday, February 18th through Sunday, February 24th. Stay tuned for details about our ribbon-cutting ceremony. We are very excited to get this project underway!

Sincerely,

Leah Scholer, Principal

P.S. As we get back into the swing of things, please remember that Fairmont Street and White Oak Way are loading zones only during school hours. Please do not leave your car unattended as this causes traffic congestion and unsafe conditions for our families entering and/or leaving school.

Purchase your White Oaks Tile by January 18!
Thank you to everyone who has purchased a tile! We have almost reached our $25,000 fundraising goal to fund our playground thanks to all of you!

We have a few tiles left. Tiles cost $125 each and are available in the office or online through our White Oaks PTA Square Store: https://squareup.com/store/whiteoakspta

If you have purchased a tile, please make sure you sign-up to paint your tile! So far, each paint party has been a lot of fun and the designs are all incredibly unique and sure to leave a lasting legacy at White Oaks.

Additional cash donations to the White Oaks PTA to fund this project are welcome after a family has met their annual San Carlos Education Foundation contribution.

Please contact [email protected] with any questions.

Thank you again for making this playground possible!

ROPES Presentations Are Coming And Judges Are Needed!
We are looking for parents and community member that would like to serve as a judge for the ROPES (Rite of Passage Experiences). ROPES are challenging projects that 4th, 6th and 8th grade students have completed which allow them to learn about their world and themselves in deeper but fun way.

There are 3 opportunities to judge:

  • Monday, February 4th, 6:00PM – 8:30PM (arrive at 5:30PM)
  • Tuesday, February 5th, 6:00PM – 8:30PM (arrive at 5:30PM)
  • Wednesday, February 6th, 6:00PM – 8:30PM (arrive at 5:30PM)

We would not be able to maintain this valuable program without the support of our community. We are asking for you to join district staff and other community members by volunteering to serve as a judge on one of our judges panels. Typically we have two to three judges per room and they judge four to six student presentations in an evening. I hope that you will be able to join us in this worthwhile event. If you are able to judge on any of those times, please contact Christina Carrier either via email at[email protected] or by phone at 650-590-5935.

Great Parent Education Opportunities for YOU!
We have arranged several outstanding opportunities for parent education in 2019, some beginning next week! All SCSD events are free, thanks to funding from our PTA Coordinating Council and support from SCEF and the Sequoia Healthcare District, so please share this with your friends who may also be interested.

You can see the complete calendar of events by clicking here. That link also takes you to resources from previous events in 2018.

When you click on that link you will see that, in addition to the more typical format of most parent education events that feature a professional speaker, this is the first time we are offering a weekly Parent Support Group which began Thursday, January 10 and will be facilitated by Marriage and Family Therapy Associates from One Life Counseling. (One Life Counseling partners with our District to provide three MFT Interns for our students.)

Another great event on January 29 will feature UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital pediatrician, Jane Anderson, M.D.. Dr. Anderson will host more of a workshop-style event where parents can try out tools and discuss habits for building healthy teens. She will also reference the book, Voice Lessons for Parents: What to Say, When to Say It, and How to Listen by Wendy Mogel. Some of you may have heard Ms. Mogel speak at the Challenge Success event last fall, and we think it's a book/topic that applies to parents of children of all ages.

We hope you can join us for those events plus the other events a little later in the year!
